Summer in Berlin: What’s On
Visiting Berlin in the summer is one of the best times to be in the city. As the place is hotting up, so is the list of things to do. With one of the most entertaining urban landscapes for a playground, you can enjoy open air theatres, swimming, beaches and pop up bars.
Here are some things we’re looking forward to doing in Berlin this summer:
Cocktails, beach volleyball and salsa – what sounds better than that? BeachMitte is a one of a kind beach volleyball court, offering a space to indulge in this summer sport, as well as providing dancing and drinking, too. Boasting the title of Europe’s largest beach volleyball centre, you can book one of the 49 courts and finish off with a cool cocktail as you recline in the sun. You can also just in on salsa and Zumba during the week too!
- Strandbar – Mitte
Relax in the sun along Strandbar Mitte, a manmade pebbled beach complete with deck chairs under tropical palm trees overlooking the River Spree. This idyllic area is one of the most popular places to spend a lazy day during the summer in Berlin and it’s no surprise as you feel like you’re in the tropics! Just across from Museum Island, you can overlook the stunning historic buildings as you relax and unwind with a cold drink.
- Cinema in the Park
There’s nothing better than being able to indulge in your favourite movie, but what’s even better is being able to watch it outside in a warm summer’s night with a picnic blanket as the sun goes down. The Freiluftkino Friedrichshain is part of the Cinema in the park movement and is a firm favourite with Berliners. See what’s on and spend an evening under the stars watching that die-hard rom com…
- Berlin Fashion Week
From 6th July – 10th July Berlin Fashion Week seizes the city. If you’re up to date on the current trends, you’ll want to get ahead for next season. See the trade fairs, public shows, fashion shows and exhibitions showcasing their new designs and creations. Having started 8 years ago, Berlin Fashion Week is a respected annual event for anyone sartorially savvy so make sure you check it.
- Strandbad Wannsee
Stradbad Wannsee is the place to go for outdoor bathing in Berlin. For more than 100 years, Stradbad Wannsee has welcomed locals who come to cool off in the lido, complete with family pool and sandy beach. If it’s really hot you can fling your towels out and spend all day sunbathing – alongside 30,000 others (the maximum capacity!) If you’re active there’s also beach volleyball and soccer available too as well as boat rental.
- Sommerkino Kulturforum
Another outdoor cinema, the Sommerkino Kulturforum in PostdammerPlatz is a great one for culture vultures offering edifying entertainment. This indie highbrow cinema presents last season’s art house favourites in the warm summer evenings. Head down early to bag yourself a deckchair and stop off at one of the delis on the way for an organic ice cream or fresh olives and bread for an evening snack.
- BUGA Flower Show 2015
BUGA – looks like a typo but in fact it is the Federal Garden show in the Havel Region. It makes for me perfect day trip out of the city if you want a change of scenery. Visit the Havel Region, a stunning 1000 year old area loved for its culture, history and unspoilt landscape. Spread across various sites, you can see the stunning exotic flowers and marvel at the beautiful bulbs in the cities of Brandenburg an der Havel, Premnitz, Rathenow, Ländchen Rhinow, Havelberg and Stölln – all hosting their own themed shows within the BUGA flower event. Put in figures, that’s over 70km of flowers!
- Citadel Music Festival 2015
If you’re a music lover you won’t want to miss out on the Citadel Music Festival which is one of the most highly anticipated events in the summer in Berlin. Artists representing every genre, style and taste from rock, pop, folk and dance are take centre stage from June to August, headlining throughout the summer. This year you can see the likes of Tom Jones, Manu Chau and Gregory Porter. Check out the schedule and book your tickets!
- Open Air Theatre
It’s not only movies you can enjoy outside during the summer in Berlin – but you can also watch stunning performances of Berlin’s best thesbians at the amphitheatre in Monbijoupark, the go-to venue for open air theatre in Berlin. This summer the program includes productions of Molière’s Tartüff to Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Over in the picturesque Schöneberger Südgelände nature park, the Shakespeare Company Berlin will be performing the classics “MACBETH!”, “DER STURM!” and as a première “WAS IHR WOLLT”, among others, during its open-air Shakespeare season from 9th June – 12th September 2015.
- Botanical Garden
If you’re after a quiet retreat and somewhere to have a relaxing picnic, the Botanical Garden (Botanischer Garten) in Berlin is the place to go. Home to over 22,000 types of plants, Berlin’s Botanical Garden is proudly in the top three most important botanical gardens in the world spread across 43 impressive hectares containing an arboretum, lush park land, gardens and greenhouses full to the brim with flowers and exotic plants.
